Due to the complex nature of the cutting process, any recommendations given regarding tooth form, pitch, feed, speed and the like are made based on amassed cutting data and are valid under ideal circumstances only. When cutting a metal one must consider the material type, section, machine and clamping stability, cutting torque, cutting-speeds available, coolant and operator experience. Most sawing problems can be traced to:
- Insufficient coolant on the blade at the beginning of a cut, ensure that the coolant is not only switched ON but actually on the blade before contact is made with the workpiece.
- Insufficient chip evacuation. This can cause blockage of the tooth gullet and tooth breakage or binding of the metal onto the side of the blade.
- Thin walled tubing presents a challenge because the start and end of the cut are effectively "solid" sections and the operator should back-off the pressure on breakthrough or he may cause the teeth to hook on the tube wall and break off.
- For hand operated machines we generally advise a reduction in the recommended pitch for a given application.
- Pausing during a cut can cause a blade to rub and become blunt quickly.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
At Renlaw we have a vast range of cutting solutions, our technical staff are equipped to satisfy almost any queries regarding standard or specialised tooling. The important things to consider when designing a cutting tool are the tool holding capabilities of the machine, feeds and speeds available, workpiece material, coolant system and chip removal.Q: Does Renlaw resharpen woodcutting tooling? A: Renlaw only regrind a limited range of "specialised" woodworking tooling, we do not regrind Tungsten Carbide (TC) tipped saw blades.
Q: What coolant should I use when cutting aluminium? A: Under normal conditions, we recommend the use of paraffin when cutting aluminium.
Q: Can I use a tapered drillbit to drill a tapered hole? A: Due to its positively spiraled flutes, a tapered drillbit tends to "screw" itself into the workpiece. We recommend that the hole be predrilled and the taper cut with a taper reamer.
Q: Can I use my drill press to mill? A: The bearings of a drill-press spindle are usually axially loaded and not designed to withstand radial loading.
Q: Does the size of a cutter change with sharpening? A: Yes, the grinding process requires the removal of material, however, if certain sizes are important a cutter may be either shortened or spiral ground to keep the diameter. Where specified a cutter can also be ground to a predetermined size.
Q: Are specialised cutters cost effective when ordered in small quantities? A: Yes, Renlaw's specialised tooling can save you time and money. Being made from only the best materials we are able to offer cost effective tooling for an enormous range of applications from prototyping to production.
